More information about AIT PLUS

If you have not already done so, it would be helpful if you would fill in the Questionnaire to the left, giving us some information about your child. This will help us to assess if AIT PLUS could possibly benefit your child. On receiving your questionnaire, we will respond to you directly, advising you whether we are likely to be able to help your child or not.

You will find here some general information and copies of parents' letters, which will describe some of the effects the treatment has had on their child. This will give you a good idea of the results you are likely to see if you bring your child for therapy.

If you are planning to obtain NHS funding, you could print out this information to show your GP or you could email us to send you a printed leaflet.

The treatment is a combination of three therapies, Auditory Integration Training, Light Therapy & a Sound Modulation system. This combination has almost doubled the rate of success, so that now 46% of parents whose children have been treated at the Centre, report major improvement.

The treatment consists of 20 sessions over a period of two weeks. This is two sessions per day of half an hour each. The treatment costs £1750. Consultations and follow up advice and support is free. The Centre is a Registered National Health Service Provider and you may be eligible for NHS funding.

We have treated almost 900 children since 1992, when the Centre opened. Three members of our Staff were personally trained by Dr. Berard in France and to our knowledge, we have the most experience in this field than anyone else in the UK and our combination treatment is unique to our Centre.

Please telephone to 0044 0208 880 1269 any weekday morning if you wish to arrange an appointment for treatment or if you wish to have an informal chat about your child.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AIT PLUS?

AIT PLUS is a unique combination of three therapies, Auditory Integration Training using Dr. Berard's method, Light Therapy and a Sound Modulation System, based on the work of Dr. Tomatis. This combination has proved to be more effective than either of the therapies individually. When the Centre used AIT alone the success rate was 24%. Using AIT and Light Therapy together, the success rate increased to 32% and with the addition of a Sound Modulation System, 46% of children treated see major improvements.

What is AIT PLUS used for?

It is used people with autism and it is also effective for children who are not autistic but have communication difficulties, temper tantrums, short attention span and learning disabilities. It is also useful for and can alleviate sound sensitivity, which may be present in children with autism as well as in children with ADD or ADHD.

Can you guarantee AIT PLUS will work?

No. There is no guarantee that AIT PLUS will change your child's behaviour or standard of learning or attention span, but according to the figures gathered from treating almost nine hundred children the results seen are as follows:

46% report "a major improvement"
24% report "a good response"
21% report "minor changes"
9% report "no change"

Will my doctor refer me?

The Centre is a Registered National Health Service Provider and an increasing number GPs are referring children for treatment, but you may refer yourself and can make an appointment without involving your doctor if you wish.

How much does it cost?

The two-week course of AIT PLUS, including Consultations costs £1750. Discounts are available for groups of two or more children and for children coming for a second or subsequent course of treatment.

Will the National Health Service pay for it?

Since the Centre is a Registered National Health Service Provider, some Health Authorities are willing to fund treatment. Your GP will need to write to your Local Health Authority (PCT) to ask for funding for your child. For children in the process of statementing it is helpful if the need for AIT PLUS treatment is noted in the Statement as this will help towards obtaining funding.

Will my Medical Insurance refund the cost?

Some medical insurance companies pay for Consultations only, some may pay for the entire treatment. Check your Policy.

What happens during the treatment?

The child sits in a comfortable chair or can sit on a parent's lap. Head-phones are put over the child's ears and we encourage the child to look at coloured lights, whilst listening to a selection of sounds filtered through Dr. Berard's original Audiokinetron. The sounds may be distorted so that the music is not always clear.

The sounds are pleasant and once the child becomes accustomed to it they usually are content to sit and listen for the full session. On booking an appointment for treatment we send parents an information sheet with suggestions on accustoming the child to wearing head-phones. Many children initially make a fuss and do not want to co-operate, but usually by the third day they accept the head-phones willingly and we usually are able to complete the treatment without difficulty.

We gradually darken the room so that the coloured lights are more effective. The lights are gentle deep colours and do not flash or change colour quickly. They have been developed specifically for children with epilepsy so as to eliminate any possibility of fits occurring as a result of lights flashing.

How many sessions are there?

The course of treatment covers two weeks, starting on a Monday through to Friday and continuing the next week, Monday to Friday. The sessions each last 30 minutes and there are two sessions daily. There must be three to four hours hours between sessions, so the appointments are made at a three or four hour interval.

What happens between sessions?

You may stay in the Centre where there is a playroom for the children and you may have lunch in the waiting room. We have a good selection of books whilst you are waiting. There is a fridge and microwave for your use and facilities for making tea or coffee. There is a park very close to the Centre and weather permitting you can spend some time there. There are animals and a children's play area and a café in the park. The nearest shops are within walking distance. The Centre is approximately half an hour by bus from Wood Green Shopping City and half an hour by Underground from Oxford Circus.

Will I need to come back again?

For many children one course of treatment is sufficient but some children benefit from a further course. Some children have been treated three times with good results each time but it is advisable not to repeat the treatment before 12 months have elapsed.

Can I be sure any information I give will be kept strictly confidential?

Yes. All information is kept strictly confidential. Neither your name nor any identifying details will be given to anyone without your express permission.

What happens after treatment?

We ask parents to make a diary to enable them to note down any changes seen. Very often the changes are subtle and frequently parents say, "it may be a co-incidence, but Jimmy started looking directly at me for the first time ........."

Most children do not achieve the full benefit until three or four months after treatment. At that time we we ask parents to review their child's progress and fill in an Evaluation Questionnaire. This helps us assess the benefits of AIT PLUS and is useful to ensure continuous improvement of the treatment. Therapists are available after treatment to discuss your child's progress at any time.
